There are cases where Crazing / Crackle effect is a desired effect like in the pictures on the left (click to enlarge). Therefore, dinnerware pottery should be uncrazed ware. Craze lines can also harbor bacteria or germs. Generally, crazing is considered a glaze defect because the vessel can be significantly weaker than an uncrazed pot. Some vessels from the same manufacturer can craze more or less than other vessels depending on the clay or glaze batch / lot, vessels usage and exposure to temperature extremes, etc. We (Lakeside Pottery) know of cases where the "pinging" sounds of newly developed crazing lines go for many years. A craze pattern can develop immediately after removal from the kiln or years later. It happens when a glaze is under tension. Glaze crazing or glaze crackle is a network of lines or cracks in the fired glazed surface.
